Flow (Mobile App)

The Problem

Despite the growing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), there remain significant challenges in integrating EV charging infrastructure into existing energy systems. Current solutions often lack user-centricity and fail to optimize operation, leading to inefficient charging practices and grid strain. Additionally, there is a need for cross-sector harmonization and standardization to facilitate activities among stakeholders and EV users. Grid challenges, such as GHG emissions, grid reinforcement costs, and renewable energy curtailment, persist without effective management of EV flexibility.

Our Solution

In response to the challenges posed by EV integration into energy systems, our solution, developed as part of the FLOW project, focuses on delivering comprehensive and user-centric smart charging solutions. We built a cross-platform mobile app for EV users, providing features such as locating nearby charging stations, scheduling appointments, and monitoring vehicle details. To ensure seamless operation and data management, we implemented a multi-threaded job scheduler on the backend to handle smartcar API calls efficiently. This scheduler periodically retrieves data and stores it in the database, overcoming rate limits and ensuring continuous access to essential information. By addressing user needs and optimizing EV charging practices, our solution contributes to the integration of EVs into energy grids, enhances grid flexibility, and supports the increased penetration of renewables, ultimately fostering mobility and energy decarbonization.
